Hwengwere says working for ZBC 'stressful' By Staff
Reporter Speaking at a workshop held by the Media Institute of southern Africa at the Harare Gardens over the weekend, he said his stint with the national broadcaster had been nerve wrecking. “I was juggling with political issues, sometimes I would be forced to please a bigger party at the expense of a smaller one. In South Africa public broadcasting is raw and relevant. SABC is all over the place, it is a commercial, public and political broadcaster,” said Hwengwere. Speakers at the workshop also lamented the national broadcaster’s lack of diversity as it mostly covers stories that concern men. Loveness Jambaya from MMPZ also said ZTV lacks diversity. “Zimbabwe lacks a diverse television channel, this means Zimbabweans have no choice. The key role of broadcasting is to entertain, educate and inform” she said. She complained that
the media largely ignores women and this was a sad development because
they constitute more than half of the country’s population. “Women
are largely ignored by the media as they only constitute 17% of the
coverage. Women constitute 52% of the country’s population but
men make up to 85% of representation,” Jambaya complained - Itsbho.com |
