A COURT reporter from the state-run Herald newspaper was due before a Harare magistrate Wednesday facing extortion charges.

Tsungirirai Shoriwa, who was arrested last week Tuesday, was released last Friday on $1 million bail.

Police spokesperson, Wayne Bvudzijena, said Shoriwa allegedly approached the brother of one Warship Dumba (43), who was in court for allegedly swindling $1,2 billion from Agripah Makadzange, and asked him for $300 000 to stop The Herald from publishing the story.

Prosecutors will say that Shoriwa told Dumba's brother that the non-publication would save him from embarrassment as many people would read the story.

Dumba's brother, who did not have the cash at that time, allegedly met Shoriwa at a Harare restaurant on February 8 where they agreed on a fee of $3 million to be paid on February 14.

It is further alleged that the suspected conman, who attended the February 8 meeting, reported the matter to the police.

A trap was set up for the reporter, leading to his arrest with $2 million in hand.
