TWO reporters from Zimbabwe's state-run Herald newspaper were due before a Harare court Tuesday charged with murder following the death of a man they accused of attempting to break and steal from their flat.

Police allege that the two newsmen assaulted the man leading to his death.

The two journalists, Tawanda Kanhema and Costa Mano, who also write for the Southern Times and Travel Magazine under the Zimpapers stable, were arrested last Friday and are being held at Harare Central Police Station.

A police spokesperson said Monday: “They are being held by the Homicide section. They attacked a man at their flat in the city centre who later died in Hospital. They were supposed to appear in court Monday but the date has been moved to Tuesday.”

A senior reporter at the Herald said police first came looking for the two and recorded statements from them soon after the assault but came and took them away after the assaulted man died in hospital.

The Herald has not reported on their arrest and due appearence in court.

A Herald source said: "The youngsters might have been drunk. Kanhema drinks, he has money. Apart from the Herald salary he gets greenbacks from the Southern Times.

"There was a debate on whether we should carry the story or not. I do not know what will happen."

Last year, the Herald’s political editor Ceaser Zvayi attacked a female colleague in the newsroom but escaped prosecution. He was reprimanded.

The Herald newsroom has previously attracted the interest of the police with journalists facing a range of allegations including demanding bribes and public drinking.
