TWO journalists from Zimbabwe's state-run Herald newspaper appeared in court Tuesday charged with the murder of a suspected burglar who tried to make a forced entry into their flat.

One of the journalists complained that he had caught a severe fever due to inhuman conditions at Harare Central Police Station.

The two journalists will remain in custody until May 30 when they next appear in court.

The two newsmen, Tawanda Kanhema and Costa Mano, were not asked to plead when they appeared before the Harare magistrates court as the court does not have jurisdiction over murder cases.

They were advised to appeal to the High Court for bail while awaiting a routine remand hearing at the end of the month.

Their lawyers from Harare law firm Muskwe and Associates told the court that Mano had caught a fever while in detention since last Friday when the pair were arrested.

Their lawyer said he wanted that to be placed on record and the state to see to it that he has access to treatment.

The two reporters are alleged to have fatally assaulted an unidentified man at their flat in Harare's city centre whom they accused of having intended to break in and steal.

Sources Tuesday said Herald Editor Pikirai Deketeke was mulling suspending his reporters pending the conclusion of his case.

It was not clear if the paper was going to run the story on the two's appearance in court considering that it failed to carry reports of their arrest.

Previously the paper has carried minor stories about its reporters who have had a brush with the law especially on extortion charges.
