ANC president Jacob Zuma on Sunday welcomed the infusion of communists and unionists in the leadership of the ANC, warning that chauvinistic nationalism could lead to the same problems experienced in Zimbabwe where President Robert Mugabe has declared that he will not surrender power even if voted out.

Commenting on the inclusion of SACP and Cosatu leaders in the new ANC KwaZulu-Natal leadership, Zuma said this was good for democracy.

He said those who saw danger in pure nationalism needed to look at Zimbabwe.

"There people are saying we fought for this country and we will not give it away even if we lose the cross (vote).

"They do this even if the country's constitution allows for the change of government through elections. That is why it is important in an organisation to have people who hold a different view.

"We need to guide against behaving arrogantly towards the people because they will reject you," warned Zuma.

Zuma also warned those who where bringing the party into disrepute by misbehaving and disrupting its meetings.

They "should be expelled on the spot and then we do the investigations later", he said.

Zuma said he would be tabling a proposal to the ANC that those who took the party to court before exhausting all constitutional avenues should also be expelled.

He later addressed the ANC rally here, where he thanked KwaZulu-Natal delegates for conducting themselves peacefully at the conference.

He referred to a previous meeting which descended into chaos when chairs and water were thrown at leaders.
