Ex-minister Chikowore dies By
Staff Reporter The details surrounding his death were sketchy last night, amid unconfirmed reports that he had committed suicide. It is a known fact that he had been unwell. Several ministers visited Chikowore's residence in Harare soon after his death was announced. No details were released by government or the ruling Zanu PF, except confirmation he had died at his home. New Zimbabwe.com was told by reliable sources last night that there were suspicions Chikowore had committed suicide. This could not be independently confirmed. Chikowore served in various portfolios since Zimbabwe's Independence in 1980, notably as Minister of Trasport and Energy, a position he relinquished in 2000 when he left Cabinet. Chikowore was famed for his love for TV cameras, at one time delaying the opening of a borehole in Beitbridge after state television reporters turned up late. Chikowore was also the subject of mean jokes for lack of better looks, but was generally respected as a cool head in President Mugabe's administration. He was born in Chivhu in 1936, and was educated at Kwenda Mission School and later Waddilove Institute. Chikowore, a veteran
of Zimbabwe's war of independence, earned a Diploma in Public Administration
from the University of New York, and later enrolled at Leeds University. |
