GORGEOUS Andriata Chironda was crowned Miss Afri-Canada on Saturday – the first Zimbabwean to win the honour in the competition’s 10-year history.

Harare-born Andriata also bagged the Best Evening Gown and Miss Congeniality awards, the latter a coveted title in beauty pageantry awarded by her peers to “the most friendly, helpful, genuine and outgoing” contestant.

She said: “I’m ecstatic to have brought the crown home and to have been an exemplary emissary for my motherland Zimbabwe."

The 27-year-old had the audience in a theatre at Toronto’s York University spell-bound as she shared the "voice of her ancestors" by playing a mbira piece called Karigamombe for her talent show performance.

She also sashayed in a beautiful and colourful traditional Ndebele outfit.

The history graduate pledged to use her reign “to work hard to bring the plight of displaced people to a wider audience.” She is the co-founder of Humane Migration and hopes to use this organisation as a vehicle for her new “social justice campaign”.

Andriata's second princess was Luwam Thomas from Eritrea and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Tiffany Bangala was the first runner-up.

A recipient of a Carmen Brock Fellowship, the beauty queen intends to pursue Doctoral studies next year.
