UK tribute dinner moved to March 2015 ... Oliver Mtukudzi

OLIVER Mtukudzi’s UK tribute dinner which was scheduled for November 29 in London has been postponed to March next year, the megastar’s management team confirmed this week.

Set to have been held in London, the dinner was aimed at celebrating the colourful musical career of Zimbabwe’s most recognised and decorated artist.

Invited VIP guests included friends of Tuku from Africa’s music royalty, among them jazz legend Hugh Masekela, Ringo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the great afrobeats legend Fela Kuti’s son Femi, Zimbabwe’s Sungura maestro Alick Macheso.

However, in a statement Friday, Mtukudzi’s manager, Sam Mataure said unforeseen technical hitches had forced them to postpone the event.

Said Mataure: “With all the preparations at a very advanced stage for the much anticipated Tuku Tribute Dinner scheduled for November 29th 2014 in London, it is with the most sincere regret that the event has had to be postponed to March 7th 2015.

“This is due to unforeseen technicalities on our part at Tuku Music. We continue to work in close liaison with the event management team in London, Blacktie Management, and we have both agreed to reschedule the exclusive event in the face of the circumstances.

“We would like to apologise unreservedly to all our fans and friends who had made plans to be with us on November 29th, and assure you that this will not be the case on March 7th 2015, at the same venue.

“To all those who had purchased advance tickets, please note that your tickets will remain valid for the event on the new date. Those who would like a refund, please kindly contact Blacktie Management (via the website: www.tukutribute.com) and they will facilitate a refund within the next 14 days.”

Adored by fans across Africa and beyond for his famously husky, soulful voice and jazzy acoustic guitar, Tuku has sold out concerts on global stages in Europe, America, Australia and beyond. He is the only African artist to receive Italy’s equivalence to the British Knighthood, the prestigious Cavaliere of the Order of Merit.

Among his compatriots, Tuku holds the distinction of being the only artiste to be honoured as the country’s Cultural Ambassador. He is also the only Zimbabwean to hold the honour of being a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
