Comedian Chigubhu in serious car accident

TWO leading Bulawayo stand-up comedians, Babongile Skhonjwa and Clive Chigubhu, were on Monday morning involved in a car accident that left the former in a critical condition.

Skhonjwa, a well-known Bulawayo socialite, comedian and businessman, is said to be battling for his life at Mpilo Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

Chigubhu, was said to have been treated and discharged.

The two were coming from a "Dj Zinhle All White Party" at Horizon Night Club in the city centre.

Several revellers who attended the show, confirmed to this publication seeing the two at the show.

"Babongile (Skhonjwa) and Clive (Chigubhu) were there at the show. I heard later around 4am that they had been involved in a car accident and were in a bad state. They should have left around 3am there about," said one of the revellers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, since he is not the official spokesperson of the two comedians.

Mduduzi Mdlongwa, of 3D Events the promoters of the show, confirmed the development but said he did not have the full details of what led to the accident. 

"It is true that Babongile and Clive where involved in an accident. Babongile is in Intensive Care Unit at Mpilo while Clive Chigubhu was treated and discharged. I will only know the full details of what transpired later," said Mdlongwa.

According to online publication, Three Men On A Boat, Skhonjwa who was driving lost control of the vehicle and "The airbag pushed him out of the rear window while Clive was thrown out of the car. Clive is relatively OK while  Babongile suffered punctured lungs and broken ribs. His conditioned is being considered stable in the Intensive Care Unit."

In his last status update on Facebook on 20 December, Skhonjwa posted pictures of the two at an unidentified function, each carrying a half full bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label with one of the pictures captioned, "Comedians night out. DOUBLE BLUE DOUBLE TROUBLE IN BLUES(sic)."

The two have shared the stage on several occasions and both featured at the recently held Ibumba International Festival.

Skhonjwa was also expected to be the Master of Ceremony at the Kalawa Jazzmee Homecoming show at Queens Sports Club on Thursday.
