Turning 89 years back ... Mugabe and wife

AS PRESIDENT Mugabe celebrates his 91st birthday Saturday dozens of stars and prominent figures from across the globe will be celebrating theirs too.

The list of Mugabe’s birthday mates includes US politician John Lewis, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt (36), fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy (88) and movie director Bob Rafelson (82).

It is not known if any of them would want to be associated with the Zimbabwean strongman who has over the years gained notoriety for bashing opponents particularly whites and Western nations.

Mugabe is not known to like any particular western showbiz character although, according to reports, he, in 1980, would have preferred rock star Cliff Richard to perform at Zimbabwe’s independence celebrations. Thanks to the late Edgar Tekere’s insistence reggae king Bob Marley eventually graced the event.

In 1997 Mugabe briefly hosted the late pop star Michael Jackson who kissed First Lady Grace Mugabe’s hand.

His only other closest known encounter with a popular star was when pictures of his fall were developed into a meme showing him part of Beyonce's Single Ladies choreography.
