IN this special episode to celebrate International Women’s Day, Noisey Raps met inspiring Zimbabwean rapper AWA who comes from the troubled Bulawayo township of Makokoba.

Despite the many challenges she’s faced, from sexual blackmail to domestic violence, she is determined to not only forge a career as a hip hop artist but to tackle these issues in her music.

AWA says her music is inspired by her personal experiences, especially the tough life in Makokoba where few people have jobs and many are forced to resort to crime.

She says she lived in a home where “violence was the answer to everything”.
