Gukurahundi play to show at Theater in the Park in August

Moment of madness ... Getrude Munhamo and Dalma Chiwereva

THEATER in The Park, which is known as the last bastion of free speech in the country, brings yet another controversial play titled ‘Lamentations @12’ which is about the 1980s killing of civilians in the Midlands and Matebeleland regions by then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe’s private brigade.

The play will run from 17th to the 19th August.

Lamentations @ 12 jarringly throws the traumatic and mental exactitude through Siphilisiwe’s experiences of the catastrophic days of what President Robert Mugabe has defined as a ‘moment of madness’.

It also touches on issues that affect the girl child.

The first time writer, Getrude Vimbai Munhamo, is also part of the two member cast and is ably supported on stage by Dalma Chiwereva and tells the story from personal experiences.

The play is produced and directed by theatre guru, Daves Guzha, who is also Rooftop Promotions Producer. Guzha said the play is rare and unique in its presentation and yet unequivocal in its mirroring of the moral decrepitude of man.

“Lamentations @ 12 is an emotionally and mentally aesthetic rich piece of work. Positioned through four epochs (1895 – 2015), “Lamentations @ 12”, gives us sight which makes us cringe as we journey through the eyes of innocence,” says Guzha.

The play chronicles how a woman forcibly bedded nine men-routinely carrying out some arduous chores as payback during the Gukurahundi era which left thousands of civilians dead in the southern part of the country.

Because of the past sad events, Stella is sexually, physically and emotionally abused by society at large; the girl child is still regarded as of less value as compared to male peers.

Getrude Vimbai Munhamo studied performing arts and media at Theory X Media. She has acted in ‘Sinner s’ (film and stage), After the Dust has Settled, Diamonds in his son’s Grave and Henrik Ibsen’s adaptation by legendary director Cont Mhlanga and The People just to name a few. She is a first time writer and “@ 12” is her writing debut. She is driven by passion to bring out the voice of the untold traumas in the life of the vulnerable innocent 12 year girl children.

Dalma Chiwereva started acting at a very young age at primary school level. Her first exposure was in a NAMA award winning television drama Izoloizolo where she played the leading role as Nodumo.
