ZIMBABWE born Thomas Mapfumo is known as the Lion of Zimbabwe for his decades-long contributions using music to the fight of freedom and social justice in Zimbabwe.

Mapfumo, who now lives in the United States in Eugene, created the genre of Chimurenga music in the 1970s. Chimurenga means liberation and the word entered common usage during the Rhodesian Bush War.

Mukanya's activism as a political and cultural hero of Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence was the subject of the recently released book “Lion Songs: Thomas Mapfumo and the Music That Made Zimbabwe.”

Mapfumo and his band The Blacks Unlimited will be sharing the bill with reggae artist Norma Fraser on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Eugene at the Hi-Fi Lounge.
