A 23-year-old reveler cum-dancer from Hwange, who pummeled a DJ for refusing to re-play the song ‘Disappear’ by dancehall king Wallace Chirimuko, popularly known as Winky D, has been sentenced to seven months in jail.

Bornwell Sibanda, openly told a magistrate Sharon Rosemani that he was obsessed with Winky D’s music that he wanted his song ‘Disappear’ to continuously play at a bar in December last year but the DJ, Moustaffa Mbewe, refused to replay it.

Sibanda of 1359 DRC Empumalanga in Hwange pleaded guilty to assault. He will however spend four months behind bars after the magistrate suspended three months on conditions.

Sibanda the court: “I was drunk and got angry when the complainant refused to play Winky D’s Disappear. I wanted the song to play as I was dancing.”

Prosecuting, Onias Nyathi said Sibanda punched Mbewe several times before stabbing him with a broken beer bottle.

“Sometime in December 2015 at 11PM, the accused and complainant were at Matake Shopping Centre in Empumalanga where Mbewe was a DJ at a night function.

“Sibanda approached him and requested that he repeats a song by Winky D and he refused,” said the prosecutor.

He said Sibanda got agitated and started assaulting the complainant with fists on the head severally.

Two patrons - Thabani Ncube and Peter Mumba - restrained Sibanda who then walked out of the bottle store, the court heard.

Later, the prosecutor added, Sibanda returned and picked an empty bottle which he used to stab Mbewe on the back of the left ear.

Mbewe, 24, of B90 Lwendulu sustained a minor cut and was taken to Hwange Colliery Hospital where he was treated and discharged while Sibanda was arrested but the case only went to court recently on summons.
