Where do you live at present?
Wellington, New Zealand. I am at university here studying marketing and information systems.
How many albums have you released?
I haven’t released an album yet, but I have put out three singles -- Got Me on Fire, Sexy and Mr Liar -- which were released internationally on iTunes. Mr Liar has been well received on the New Zealand charts. It was produced by my friend, Shaun “Stardust” Matondo, who lives in Australia.
I am working with Stardust and other guys at present, putting together my album which I hope to get ready for release in November. I need to do a lot of groundwork in the meantime, finding a record label and sorting out the marketing and distribution.
The video for Mr Liar was a professional job, congratulations. How did you put it together?
Thank you. The video was self-funded in large part because I don’t have a record label yet. I did receive some funding from a government programme here called ‘New Zealand On Air’. They generally support promising artists.
I have been doing a lot of social media promotion and when it was time to shoot the video, I asked friends on Facebook if they wanted to be part of the shoot. About 70 came back to me and I invited them onto the set and everyone was just free-styling. The video was shot and directed by Darwin Go from Gigantor Media.
Well, I’m a new artist on the block and anything to raise awareness is welcome. I guess it also helps that I like Rosco’s remix. He is a good friend of mine and lives in Christchurch here. He is really talented and you will hear a lot more about him. His real name is Emmanuel Marambakuyana.
How would you describe your music?
There are a lot of changes in the music industry in terms of genre-overlap. I would probably say it’s a fusion of Afro-pop, RnB and electro house. I guess that description will make sense when you listen to my album.
TK PARADZA: WORTH IT
Which schools did you go to and what are your memories?
I went toRedcliff Primary School and the Midlands Christian College for secondary school. I used to play rugby. I was a competent fullback.
Outside of school I played golf. I represented Zimbabwe in a tri-nation junior golf tournament in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 2002.
How did you develop an interest in music?
I can’t quite put a finger on an event or day when I decided I want to be a musician. As I was growing up, I just developed a passion for music. I remember pestering my parents to get me a keyboard, but I would not get it until I was 16. From then on, I have been writing songs and trying ideas. I haven’t stopped.
How much song writing do you do?
I write all my stuff. The lyrics just come to me. Sometimes I can be just talking to somebody and I get an idea or vibe.
What’s your favourite musical instrument?
I play keyboard, it’s my favourite. I brought my keyboard over from Zimbabwe.
Which Zimbabwean musicians do you look up to?
I grew up listening to Oliver Mtukudzi, and still do. I like his whole musicology and instrumentation. I also took a liking to Decibel and Maskiri as my interest in music grew back in Zimbabwe.
Do you remember your first live performance?
It was at Midlands Christian College. I was the lead singer for our choir and we were in a competition. We sang ‘Oh Happy Day’ and we pretty much brought the house down.
I was nervous before going on though. Even today I’m nervous before going on stage but once I start singing, it all goes away. Now I perform almost every week at various events including weddings, birthdays, corporate gatherings and as an opening act for big international artists. I have opened for Montell Jordan and K-Ci & Jojo.
What’s the nicest thing ever said to you by a fan?
Two girls came over to me after a gig and said they would love to carry my babies. I was caught off-guard and just laughed.
What’s the worst job you ever had?
I was a kitchen hand in an Indian restaurant. I was washing dishes there and I would go home every night smelling of curry. It was awful. At least the money was good.
If you could, what would you change in your physical appearance?
I like my appearance, that’s how God made me and I appreciate it everyday. I don’t stand in front of a mirror and say ‘I don’t like this’.
What are you most afraid of?
Snakes. I can’t stand snakes. Actually, it’s two things I’m afraid of -- snakes and being buried alive.
If you were to be 18 again, what would you do differently?
I would focus on my music a bit more. I would be where I am now, but without the worry of settling down, having a family and being independent. I would just be young, free, and successful.
If your house caught fire, and you had time to retrieve two items, what would those be?
My laptop which has all my music material, and my X-Box.
What’s your idea of a sexy woman?
It’s more character-based – she has to be funny, intelligent and know how to take care of herself physically and mentally. A woman who can be the rock of our relationship.
What’s the scariest thing you have ever done?
Bungee jumping. We have as sky tower here in Wellington, a huge skyscraper. I took a plunge there and saw my life flash before my eyes. It was the craziest thing I have ever done.
Who would you most like to meet – dead or alive?
Fortune Muparutsa, may his soul rest in peace. I was meant to meet him before I came to New Zealand. Somehow I missed that chance, I really loved his music and production.
What do you think is the best song ever recorded?
‘We are the World’ by Michael Jackson.
Can you describe yourself in three words?
Creative, driven and kiddish.
What would you not travel without?
My laptop. Am always making music, and constantly writing so I need it as a necessity.
If one artist was to perform at your party, who would get the call?
Usher. He’s my idol, my favourite artist of all time. If I’m being creative I ask myself ‘what would Usher do?’ Or ‘how would Usher sing this?’
If you had the power to ban one thing in the world, what would that be?
Smoking.
If you could be invisible for a day, what would you get up to?
Oh man, I would get up to a whole bunch of stuff. I would live a trillionaire’s life. I would do everything I can’t do financially now -- rolling in the best cars, speed racing and just spoil myself. I would also spend a few hours listening to what girls talk about in the locker rooms. I would love to know what exactly goes on in a woman’s mind.
