ENOCK ‘Nox’ Guni attaches a lot of importance to the quality of his music. He enjoyed limited success with his hit, Garandichauya, but the urban groover is not chasing hits – just satisfaction in his own work.

Briefly, tell us where it all started, and how you got here?
My music journey began when I auditioned in the talent show, Superstar 2002. I was studying for my A’ Levels and unfortunately the third round of the competition clashed with my exams, so I opted for school first.
I then enrolled with Midlands State University and joined SHAPE Zimbabwe [inter-university HIV advocacy group]. My work with SHAPE gave me the breakthrough I needed. Roy and Royce assisted me in doing my first single, ‘Iwe Maria’, which had a great video to go along with it.
In 2004, I released my first album called ‘Wandipengesa’ which contained ‘Iwe Maria’. In 2006, I joined the group Chigutiro and we did a song called ‘Chigutiro Anthem’ with Blush, Trinta and Ngonie. I then released my second album called ‘Rythm and Blues’ in the same year and it had songs like ‘Ruvarangu’ and ‘Nguva Ichauya’ which featured Cindy. ‘Nguva Ichauya’ turned out to be Power FM song of the year in 2007.
In 2007, I joined forces with Trevor Dongo and Tawanda Mugodi to form Afrounik and together we released an album called ‘Unikness’ which had the well-received song, ‘Kana Musipo’.
In 2008, just before I left for South Africa, I released my third album called Chapter 3 which comprised hit songs such as ‘Ndinoshuwa’ featuring Leonard Mapfumo, Kunerima, Washanduka and ‘Kudakwashe’ which featured Blush and Trevor.
In 2009, I released my fourth album from my South African base called ‘Music, Love and Me’ with songs like ‘Iwe Rudo’, ‘Ndavenaye’, ‘Wandinoda’ and ‘Garandichauya’.
My current album, ‘Zim's Finest: Tisu Tine Yese’ was released on December 24 last year and has songs such as ‘Wandipengesa’ featuring Maskiri, ‘Ini Ndada’, ‘Tanakirana’ and ‘Baby Gara’ featuring Maskiri.
NOX: GARANDICHAUYA
Who writes your music?
I write all the songs I sing, I also write for other artists, I have written songs for Diana, Blush and Maskiri as well. I am currently doing touch-ups to a song I wrote for the UK-based Bkay & Kazz.
What’s your favourite musical instrument?
I play the keyboard, though I am not the best person at it.
What would you do if today was your last day?
I would shoot all the videos of my current album and record 100 other new songs -- half of them being gospel.
Most of your songs have a theme of love. Is there any special reason for this?
Love is a universal language, even the Bible promotes love. I can never run out of things to say about love, though I touch on other topics too.
NOX: INI NDADA
Who is your role model?
My biggest role model is Jesus, followed by my parents.
What were your dreams as a child?
I always wanted to be a pilot, but my sciences were really bad so I gave up on it. I then wanted to be a doctor, but that required sciences too so I gave up on that as well. I decided to follow my brother's footsteps and studied marketing, I hold an honours degree in Marketing Management and I am almost done with my Masters.
Do you get nervous before every show?
I used to get nervous in the early days of my career, but I am more confident now and I know what I need to do for my fans.
Who would you like to go on tour with?
P-Square tops my list. Not far behind would be Chris Brown and Trey Songz alongside Drake. That would be a dream come true.
Which one of your songs was inspired by personal experience?
I actually don’t have a single song from my personal experience, all of my songs are written out of mere flexible imagination.
What would you say has been the highlight of your career?
2010 was a bomb! Having my song, Wandinoda, played in Big Brother Africa All Stars, man that felt so good. It’s really amazing and satisfying when your work is so publicly appreciated.
NOX: WANDINODA
How is the world today different from what it was like when you were a child?
The world today is crazy! Back in the day we had manners, the world was just perfect, maybe it’s because I was still a kid.
NOX feat LEONARD MAPFUMO: NDINOSHUWA
Where do you see your career in five years?
God willing, I will be an African star. I want people to remember me mostly because of the music. I want to take Zimbabwean urban music to a whole new level. God help me.
What is your favourite holiday spot, food and gadget?
My favourite holiday spot, if I am not in my rural home with my family, is Madagascar. My favourite food is sadza nenyama ine tuCovo. Typical Zimbabwean man, I know. I can’t survive three days without sadza. My favourite gadget is my Blackberry phone.
What happens in a typical week?
Every day I wake up and say a prayer, leave for my day job and compose a song or two whilst I’m at it. When I return home I call my woman, cook, and watch my favourite soapies: Rythm City, Scandal and Generations then end it all with some action movie. Thursdays are my club nights at Baseline for some reggae and dancehall music. Weekends are for my fans and the studio.
What is your next big project?
I’m releasing my new album 50 Minutes to FAME shortly. It’s already done, we are busy with the videos now in collaboration with SONY Music Africa. Fingers crossed, the album will be released and marketed internationally. Africa here I come!
Describe Zimbabwe in three words

I have plans to tour the UK and Ireland this summer and USA end of August. I would love to perform in Malaysia and Australia.
