URBAN grooves star Nox Guni has made his mark in the past year and last weekend’s two UK gigs proved his star is shining brighter even outside South Africa, where he is based.
Fans would have been slightly disappointed that the gig – advertised as also featuring the Zimbabwe-based King Shaddy and Sniper Storm – ended up a one-man show.
If the crowd felt short-changed by the promoters – who claimed King Shaddy and Sniper Storm submitted their visa applications too late to make the trip – then Nox was milking the moment as he became the star attraction.
The 'Garandichauya' star delivered tidy performances in Manchester and Coventry and by the end fans hardly remembered they had been promised three acts.
For Nox, it was his third tour of the UK in slightly over a year – and the sing-alongs from the crowd suggested growing familiarity with the artist and the music.
He was supported on the tour by Sean Focus from Malawi, who is signed to his Ice and Roses label.
Wasting no time, Nox opened on both nights with his club banger ‘Ndinonyara’ and by the time he got to ‘Kana Ndinewe’ he was like a mother bearing candy at a children’s party – his female fans hanging onto every verse as if it was written for them.
Nox flew back to South African on Monday ahead of joint concerts with Alick Macheso in Johannesburg on June 29 and Pretoria on June 30.
He has tours of Canada, the United States and Australia lined up for later in the year.
