THOMAS Mapfumo will perform in the United Kingdom for the first time in three years later this month.
Mapfumo’s UK gigs have been beset by problems in the past – from his no-shows to cockups by promoters.
But now the Chimurenga muso has decided to adopt a new concept by putting together the shows himself and cutting out promoters.
Mapfumo, who is self-exiled in the United States, will perform at the Oasis Banqueting in London on July 27 and at Starlite, Leicester, a day later, according to a schedule released by his daughter, Charmaine.
Charmaine, who lives in London, and Taurai Cheteni – a close associate of the singer based in Leeds – have been appointed to coordinate the gigs.
Mapfumo told New Zimbabwe.com by telephone from his home in Oregon: “After many years of dealing with different promoters, some of whom have let us down, I have decided that the only way we can avoid disappointing our fans is to take care of the whole organisation of these gigs.”
In a 50-second video posted on YouTube, Mapfumo said: “July 27 and 28 we will be in England for these great shows.”
Mapfumo rapper son Tapfumanei, known by his stage name Tai, is expected to make his UK debut live on stage as a curtain raiser for his father.
