SOUTH African DJ Oscar ‘Oskido’ Mdlongwa is set to be honoured with a Special Recognition award at the Channel O Music Video Awards being held in Johannesburg on November 17.

The Kalawa Jazmee boss, whose father, Esaph, is a former Zimbabwe MP, will be recognised for his contribution to South African music during a career spanning nearly 15 years.

His pioneering work in the growth of urban culture music in South Africa spawned acts such as Mafikizolo, Professor, Trompies, Bongo Maffin, Boom Shaka, Brothers of Peace, Thebe, Winnie Khumalo, Zonke, Dr Malinga and Alaska.

The Channel O Video Awards, held annually, will take place at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto township.

Fittingly, three of Oskido’s protégés Dr Malinga, Alaska and Thebe are due to perform on the night.

Previous recipients of the award are Nigeria’s Koko Master D’Banj (2011), Somali-born K’Naan (2010), South African Brenda Fassie (posthumous, 2009) and Ghana’s George Lee (2008).

Meanwhile, Oskido has confirmed that he will perform in Bulawayo and Victoria Falls in December for the third straight year.

He told New Zimbabwe.com by telephone from Johannesburg: “I will be in Zimbabwe from December 26 through to December 28. I’m just finalising who else is travelling but I can confirm DJ Zinhle will be there.

“We will announce the specific dates for the gigs closer to Christmas.”
