CAPS United 2-1 Highlanders

HIGHLANDERS’ Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title aspirations received a dent after falling to a second straight defeat after being edged 2-1 by Caps United at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.

In what was their first away defeat this season, the Bulawayo giants were undone by a ninth minute goal by Dominic Chungwa and substitute Leonard Fiyado’s strike 10 minutes before time.

Milton Ncube’s stunning 25-meter free-kick on the half hour mark was the pick of the afternoon although it was for a losing cause.

Suffering their second defeat inside four days, Highlanders created a cushion for second-placed Harare City to assume the lead for the first time this season if they beat Hwange on Sunday.

It was a delightful afternoon for Caps United who are now three points behind leaders Highlanders with 26 points.

Highlanders’ former winger Rahman Kutsanzira haunted his former employers when he created both of Caps’ goals. Kutsanzira’s long cross from the right was converted by Chungwa as Highlanders defenders failed to clear it.

Fiyado then calmly connected another cross from Kutsanzira for United’s second after Ncube had remarkably beaten Caps goalie Tafadzwa Dube with a well-taken free-kick.

Ncube came close to giving Bosso a second 12 minutes later but his free-kick hit the crossbar.

Nine minute after the restart, Kutsanzira cleared off the line while he also forced a desperate save with a powerful drive from Munyaradzi Diya in goal for Highlanders.

Saturday Results: Tripple B 4-2 Buffaloes (Dulibadzimu), FC Platinum 1-0 Black Rhinos (Mandava), CAPS United 2-1 Highlanders (National Sports)

Sunday Fixtures: Shabanie Mine v Chicken Inn (Maglas), Triangle United v Black Mambas (Gibbo), Dynamos v How Mine (Rufaro), Hwange v Harare City (Colliery)
