Musona on target for Chiefs

DEFENDING Absa Premiership champions Kaizer Chiefs have announced the signing of Knowledge Musona on a loan deal from German Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim.

The Zimbabwean international signed for Hoffenheim from the Glamour Boys in 2011 and struggled to command a regular place at club.

Chiefs continued to monitor his progress and made their intensions clear to bring him back should the opportunity present itself.

Before his departure to Germany, Musona arrived at Chiefs unknown to many supporters in 2009.  But it did not take long for him to announce his arrival at Naturena and was awarded the PSL Rookie of the Year award in 2010 even though he played a handful of games during that season.

Musona stamped his authority the following season as he scored 15 goals in 28 league games to win the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot in 2010-11 season. That performance made the Germans and other clubs take note.

A move was soon on the cards for the Zimbabwean to Hoffenheim. After battling to break into the first team, he was loaned out to another Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in 2012.

The player appears happy to return to the Absa Premiership where he hopes to reignite his scoring prowess.

“There’s nothing much to say – Kaizer Chiefs is my team and my first home,” Musona said in an interview published on the club’s website.

“I am happy to be back and looking forward to the season and working with the players and the technical team. Any jersey number will do for me, as I don’t play a number, I play football.”

The player conceded that things were not as he expected in Germany but nevertheless a learning curve in his playing career.

“My stay in Germany was tough especially as I didn’t get much game time due to changes in management at both teams that I played for,” said.

“I always checked Chiefs results on line and was happy to see that PSL has become tough. There is no longer a small team and I was also happy to see the league getting stronger.”

Amakhosi football manager Bobby Motaung said he was overjoyed following a marathon process that was finally concluded on Friday morning.

“Bringing back Musona signals our intentions as we prepare for what promises to be a competitive season following the league and cup double achievement of the 2012-13 PSL Season. We brought Musona on a one-season loan with an option to buy,” said Motaung.

“When we sold him we agreed with Hoffenheim that Kaizer Chiefs will be his home in case Musona returns to South Africa. This is a clear statement that we mean business and we always do our best to bring the best talent to Kaizer Chiefs.”
