THE Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) says Sunday Chidzambwa remains the senior national soccer team coach and dismissed as inaccurate reports suggesting the Warriors mentor had quit the job over non-payment of his salary.
Chidzambwa’s assistant Joey Antipas was recently quoted in the media as saying had resigned claiming ZIFA had failed to pay their salaries since their appointment in November last year.
ZIFA Vice Chairman, Tendai Madzorera also confirmed that contractual negotiations with Chidzambwa had failed to make any headway.
However, ZIFA Chief Executive, Henrietta Rushwaya told NewZimbabwe.com that she had spoken to Chidzambwa who indicated that the media reports were inaccurate.
“I spoke to Mhofu (Sunday Chidzambwa) after the reports came out and he said they were incorrect. So, as far as we are concerned, he is still the Warriors head coach and I have certainly not received any letter from him suggesting otherwise,” Rushwaya said.
Still, Rushwaya conceded that ZIFA’s financial woes were making it difficult for the association to honour contractual obligations with its employees.
“ZIFA is experiencing financial challenges and all employees are affected. The CEO, mind you, is also an employee of the organisation. We are however working hard to address these issues,” She said.
Rushwaya also said the national team would not be travelling to Thailand for a friendly match scheduled for Tuesday which the Asian country had requested as part of its preparations for the Asian Cup championship.
“We indicated to our Thai counterparts that we would not be able to put a team together for the tie due to the Christmas holidays. But we have a number of other friendly matches lined up and several teams have sent in requests to play us,” she said.
Rushwaya said the Chinese national team has confirmed that it would be travelling to Zimbabwe for friendly matches in February while another tie against the West African country of Gabon is still being discussed.
