MANDLA ‘Lulu’ Mpofu is likely to be confirmed as new Highlanders interim coach on Wednesday when the club’s executive meets to decide on the fate of head coach Bongani Mafu.

Mafu failed his 90-minutes test on Sunday when they went down 3-2 to PSL leaders Chicken Inn at Barbourfields and is just awaiting his fate after being saved from the axe last week when they lost 1-0 to Whawha in Gweru.

Bosso’s executive review meeting was due to take place on Monday, but could not go ahead as club boss Peter Dube and CEO Ndumiso Gumede are attending a two-day SuperSport workshop in Harare until Tuesday.

Club treasurer Donald Ndebele is also in the USA for personal business leaving only secretary general Emmet Ndlovu and committee member Wisdom Mabhena in Bulawayo.

Vice chairman of the club Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu is based in Harare.

Mafu has presided over the worst period of Highlanders since 1989 when the club was almost relegated. He has managed just six wins, eight losses and seven draws and the club sits on 10th position on the log, in real danger of relegation.

Lulu is Mafu’s assistant and it is understood the Bosso bosses don’t want to make many changes at this stage of the season.

Mafu’s biggest achievement was breaking the Dynamos jinx, albeit in a cup competition when they defeated them 1-0 in the ZNA Commander Charities final in Harare, but losing to clubs like Whawha is unacceptable.

Sources said the powerful board of directors, chaired by businessman Mgcini Nkolomi, has approved the immediate changes and want Lulu to take charge in the next nine matches and save the team from further embarrassment.

Next season, Briton Desmond Bulpin, according to sources, is likely to take charge of the club with his accommodation already secured in Sunninghill in addition to a car, thanks to usual benefactor, Tshinga Dube.

The SuperSport workshop in Harare came at a time when the international broadcaster, PSL’s partners, were concerned about the security of their equipment and staff following an attack on one of the crew members by angry Dynamos fans after the champions conceded a last minute goal at Barbourfields against Tsholotsho to draw 1-1 two weeks back.
