CAPS United 2-2 Kiglon Bird

CAPS United needed a controversial last minute penalty to claim an undeserved draw against Kiglon Bird in a tempestuous league encounter played at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.

Police had wielding batons and vicious dogs were called in to disperse restive United fans as they waited to vent their frustrations on coach Lloyd Chitembwe after the game.

Samuel Chitsamba and Martin Vengesai scored for Kiglon while Last Chibwiro grabbed a brace to rescue a point for United.

However, referee Samuel Matemera invited the wrath of Kiglon when he denied them what appeared to be a clear penalty in the first half and then controversially awarded United one in the last minute.

Matemera felt Kiglon’s Gift Bello had handled inside the box in injury time and pointed to the spot in a decision that enraged Kiglon.

The visitors’ players had to be separated from the official by police while their coach, Llyod Mutasa, was sent off for protesting the decision.

Kiglon were the better side however, and struck first in the tenth minute when defender Chitsamba connected with a glancing header from a Dominic Betani cross on the edge of the penalty area.

Chitembwe responded by pulling off striker Clive Kawinga for Last Chibwiro.

The tactical substitution paid off as Chibwiro finished off a cross from fellow substitute Joel Lupahla in the 52nd minute.

But Kiglon reclaimed the lead five minutes later when Vengesai cleverly chipped over CAPS goalkeeper Itai Chiwara.

Mutasa said his charges had put up a committed display only to be let down by poor officiating.

“My boys played very well. They were on top of the situation for the better part of the game and even the Caps United fans will agree with that. However, the referee decided to influence the result which is very unfortunate,” said Mutasa.

Meanwhile in other games also played on Sunday Shabanie Mine beat Monomotapa 2-0 while Hwange overcame Eagles by the same scoreline.
