ZIMBABWE’S foreign contingent trooped into camp on Monday, and more were expected on Tuesday ahead of the Warriors’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener away to Liberia on Saturday.

Caretaker coach Norman Mapeza called up 36 players, including 13 professionals based abroad.

The 23 domestic league players were joined for training on Monday by the Mamelodi Sundowns trio of Nyasha Mushekwi, Method Mwanjali and Lionel Mtizwa and the Kaizer Chiefs duo of defender Thomas Sweswe and forward, Knowledge Musona.

Team manager Sharrif Mussa said: “Most of the players coming from outside the country should be in by lunchtime on Tuesday.”

The team would be leaving either on Wednesday or Thursday, he said.

Poland-based midfielder Clemence Matawu remains a doubt with a troublesome ankle injury. Team doctors were set to look at him before the trip to Monrovia.

Al Hilal striker Edward Sadomba, Quincy Antipas, Noel Kaseke, Onismor Bhasera, Costa Nhamoinesu and Justice Majabvi were all expected on Tuesday.

The team trained under the watchful eye of caretaker coach Norman Mapeza, while German development advisor Klaus Dieter-Pagels was also part of the session.

Mapeza was forced to defend himself after drawing criticism for dropping Warriors skipper Benjani Mwaruwari who was club hunting before signing for English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers last week.

Mapeza will trim his squad to 22 players before departure.

Zimbabwe’s qualifying group includes Mali and Cape Verde.
