ZIMBABWEAN tennis star Cara Black is through to the quarter finals of the women’s doubles at the ongoing US Open in New York as she continues the chase for a ladies’ doubles major this year.
Seeded ninth, Cara and Australian playing partner Anastasia Rodionova recovered from a set down to beat the unseeded German pair of Julia Goerges and Anna-lena Groenfield 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
The win sets up a last sixteen duel against 14th seeds Elena Vesnina and Vera Zvonareva of Russia.
Cara won the US Open in 2008 and was a finalist in 2009 but has been less successful in the doubles events since the break-up of her successful partnership with American, Liezel Huber.
The Zimbabwean is however doing well in the mixed doubles where she plays with Leander Paes of India.
The two are also through to the quarter finals at the US Open where they are due to take on Anna-lena Groenfield and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas.
Cara and Leander, who are seeded second, could face her former partner Huber should they all make to the finals.
Huber, seeded first with Bob Bryan of the US, is also through to the quarter finals of the mixed doubles.
Meanwhile, a win in the mixed doubles, could mark one of Cara’s most successful year on the professional circuit.
The Zimbabwean clinched the season opening Australian Open with Paes in January and followed that up with victory at the Wimbledon Championships in June.
The Aussie win ensured Cara became only the third woman in the Open era to complete a career mixed doubles Grand Slam.
She has collected about US$411000 in winnings on the circuit this year, taking her career earnings to US$6.3 million since turning professional in 1998.
