BARCLAYS Zimbabwe invested more than half a million dollars in graduate trainee programmes in the country last year as an initiative to capacitate young adults entering the banking sector.
The bank on Friday said it managed to raise intellectual capital through their Pan-African Graduate Training Programme where 120 top graduates were recruited from local and international universities between 2011 and 2014.
Training and development has been a main focus at Barclays Zimbabwe for over 100 years.
The Barclays Zimbabwe programme is part of a Barclays Africa initiative that brings over 200 graduates together from 12 African countries where Barclays has presence.
“Our selection process has managed to identify gifted young students from local universities and educational institutions across the world. We have seen an increase of interest with young Zimbabweans overseas, looking for opportunities to come back home. Barclays is committed to supporting young talent,” said Danet Chifamba, Barclays Human Resources Director.
The Barclays Attaché programme exposes third year students to a real working environment and allows candidates to gain hands-on experience in the various departments across the Barclays business units.
Third year students from local universities are offered one year attachments where they are able to gain an appreciation of banking operations and also build on untapped skills and talents.
Students are also given insights into the global business, vision, values and culture of Barclays. It is a great first step on the career ladder for energetic, talented and analytical students.
“Our challenging but rewarding programmes have been highly successful in identifying top talented graduates, many who are now managers in Zimbabwe and other markets. Barclays will continue investing in our human capital as we actively participate in the development of quality leaders who will have a positive influence to our economy,” says George Guvamatanga, Barclays Managing Director.
The graduate trainee programe is in line with the Barclays Africa drive to create prospects for young graduates to Prosper through opportunities provided for during the two year programme. Graduates engage with fellow graduates from 11 other Barclays African countries and senior management from Barclays Africa Group Limited, giving them an opportunity to initiate and develop their professional networks.
The robust structure of the programme aims to challenge graduates to excel in challenging environments.
The Barclays Graduate trainee program is aimed at providing a transition for graduates to be moulded into high calibre individuals who will support Barclays talent development and succession planning to ensure high level business continuity.
The Barclays Pan African Graduate Development Programme aims at selecting and hiring post graduates, from a variety of academic disciplines, who will be given professional and technical training, mentoring and coaching.
The programme design exposes graduates to both on the job learning and behavioural competencies that are delivered through Graduate Trainee Summits.
Applications to the 2015 Barclays Pan African Graduate Development Programme and Attache Programme will open later in the year.Advertisement
