POLICE in Botswana have picked up two Zimbabwean lawyers on allegations of operating an illegal law firm in that country and violating immigration laws.

The pair, Nkosana Admire Ngwenya, 27, of Ngwenya and Associates and Meshack Nyakaswa, 42, of Nyakaswa Legal Services were last Tuesday arrested last week and have since appeared in court.

According to media reports in that country, Nyakaswa was arrested on suspicions of forgery, and practicing law without proper qualifications, and documentation.

Ngwenya a qualified lawyer is said to be staying in Botswana illegally and violated that country`s immigration laws by overstaying by more 292 days.

Another charge is that he was operating a law firm in Phase 2 location in Gaborone without residence and work permits since September 2017.

According to a police report, Ngwenya also employed Nyakaswa as his assistant despite the latter not being a qualified lawyer.

The accused persons allegedly have been appearing before Magistrates Courts and High Court and illegally represented more than 450 clients.

Botswana authorities have in the past few years tightened its immigration laws to clamp down on illegal immigrants mostly from Zimbabwe, who skip the border to seek for better fortunes in neighbouring countries like South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.
