Brief scores: Zimbabwe A 224 (Innocent Kaia 36, Ryan Burl 85; Rohan Mustafa 3-46) lost to UAE 228 for 8 in 45.2 overs (Ghulam Shabbir 71, Mohammed Usman 44, Mohammed Qasim 34 not out; Brandon Mavuta 4-53) by six wickets.
A QUICK-FIRE knock by Man-of-the-Match Ghulam Shabbir helped the UAE trounce Zimbabwe ‘A’ team in their first friendly 50-over match on Thursday at the ICC Academy ground in Sports City.
Chasing a moderate target of 225 for victory, the UAE coasted well but the visitors must have fancied their chances briefly when they had the hosts 99 for 4 after 18 overs.
Rock-solid Ghulam, however, had different ideas as he played aggressively before being stumped by Peter Moor off the bowling of spinner Brandon Mavuta for 71 off 50 balls that contained eight hits to the ropes.
Ghulam was associated in two good partnerships to guide the UAE to a six-wicket victory. First he added 65 runs for the second wicket with opener Rohan Mustafa (23, 34 balls, three 4s). Then he and Mohammed Usman (44 runs, 65 balls, four 4s, one 6) stitched a 63-run partnership for the fifth wicket that put victory beyond Zimbabwe ‘A’ side.
Mohammed Qasim (34 not out, 47 balls, four 4s, one 6) ensured that there were no further hiccups for the UAE and added 46 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket with Ahmed Raza (16 not out).
Earlier, opting to bat, the visiting team struggled against a disciplined bowling and folded up for 224 as skipper Rohan Mustafa dealt them a deadly blow by taking two wickets in two balls to end a whirlwind partnership for Zimbabwe ‘A’ between Ryan Burl (85, 65 balls, seven 4s, three 6s) and Kavin Kasuza.
The two middle order Zimbabwean batsmen added 67 runs in 51 balls. The rest of the visiting batsmen failed to consolidate.Advertisement
