A Bulilima woman, in Matebeleland South, collapsed and died in a polling station queue to cast her vote during Monday’s election.

This was revealed by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson Priscilla Chigumba during a media briefing on Monday night.

“The commission is saddened to learn of an unfortunate incident in Bulilima where a female voter collapsed and died at a polling station. We want to express our deepest condolences to the family of the now deceased,” she said.

The ZEC boss did not reveal the name and age of the deceased.

Neither did she disclose any information around the possible cause of her death.

Millions of Zimbabweans went to cast their votes Monday with ZEC putting the voter turnout at the end of polling at 75 percent.

Many were made to endure long hours in the queues countrywide as polling officers toiled to reduce the number of voters who thronged the polling stations.

ZEC deputy Commissioner Emmanuel Magadi May this year said at least 5 000 registered voters had passed on before the completion of the biometric voter registration exercise.

There are 5,5 million Zimbabweans who registered with the biometric voter registration system.
