ZIMBABWE’S Cara Black maintained her charge for a second US Open doubles title by breezing into the quarter finals on Monday despite bowing out of the mixed doubles.
Seeded third, Cara and Indian doubles partner Sania Mirza won their third round tie in straight sets against the unseeded pair of Serbian Jelena Jankovic and Klara Kokoalova of the Czech Republic, beating them 6-3, 6-4.
The Indo-Zimbabwean pairing will now take on the unseeded duo of China’s Yi-Fan Xu and Zania Diyas for a place in the semi-finals.
Cara has only won the US Open once in 2008 since turning professional in 1998. Last year she was knocked out in the third round.
The Zimbabwean has also been contesting the mixed doubles with another Indian partner Leader Paes but they were knocked out in the quarter finals by Abigail Spears of the United States and Mexican Santiago Gonzalez.
Cara and Leander lost the first set 6-4 but claimed the second by the same margin forcing a tie break which they however lost 8-10
