CARA Black and Indian partner Sania Mirza went down fighting against the top-seeded pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the women’s doubles final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Indo-Zimbabwean pair lost 7-6 (4), 6-3 against the Italian duo.
Errani and Vinci were playing in their first tournament since winning the Wimbledon title last month.
The Italian pair was forced to a tie-breaking first set by Sania and Black as both teams wouldn’t let up on their serves.
The second set was all in favour of Errani and Vinci as they served for the match and broke Sania and Black to win their first Rogers Cup title.
“It was a tough match. We didn’t play unbelievable tennis. The first set was very close,” said Errani.
Sania and Black had earlier knocked out the second seeds Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei and China’s Peng Shuai in the semi-finals.
The winners split $133,700 while the losers received $67,500.
Meanwhile  Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the Toronto Masters with an upset win over Roger Federer, two years after injuring himself at the same event in a freak collision with a fire hydrant.
French 13th seed Tsonga hit 11 aces and 26 winners in Sunday’s final 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) while Federer, two days after his 33rd birthday, was undone by 37 unforced errors.
In women’s singles, third seed Agnieszka Radwanska toppled former world number one Venus Williams in straight sets to clinch her first title of the season.
Poland’s Radwanska registered a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over the American in just 81 minutes as she claimed her 14th career singles title.Advertisement
