A CARJACKER has been sentenced to five years imprisonment after he was caught pirating using a Honda Fit he had stolen in Chinhoyi, last week.
Luckymore Shamu appeared before Chinhoyi Magistrate Ignatius Mugova this week charged with one count of theft.
He was found guilty and slapped with five years imprisonment before one year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Shamu will, therefore, serve an effective four years behind bars.
The complainant was Farai Muzheri of Mzari suburb, Chinhoyi.
Prosecutor Nyasha Sibesha told the court that on September 30, 2021, Muzheri parked his Honda Fit vehicle worth US$4 500 at his Mzari home.
However, Shamu and his accomplice, who is still at large, proceeded to Muzheri’s residence where they opened the unlocked gate and gained entry into the yard.
The thieves then used a duplicate ignition key to start the car before driving off but were spotted by Muzheri’s mother who raised alarm.
Inside the vehicle was one bag of Larfage cement, a speaker, Jerry can, a national identity card, and a driver’s licence belonging to the complainant.
A report was immediately lodged at Chinhoyi Central Police Station.
On October 1, police arrested Shamu while operating a passenger service in the Kenzamba in Makonde using the stolen car.
