Chelsea dent United’s Champions League hopes

KickOff

Chelsea ended the weekend in fourth spot after playing to a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the English Premiership on Sunday.

United made five changes in Eric Bailly, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku, as Chelsea went for four in Antonio Rudiger, Marco Alonso, Mateo Kovacic and Willian.

Chelsea were inches away from falling behind on three minutes, thankfully Kepa Arrizabalaga palmed Lukaku’s shot for a corner.

There was nothing though that the Spaniard could do 11 minutes in, as Mata propped home a rebound from a loose ball inside the area.

United seemed destined for victory, but the Blues fought back as Alonso and Jorginho fashioned attempts in the matter of times.

Chelsea were level on 43 minutes after Alonso pounced on a handling error from David De Gea to finish from the far side.

The Red Devils tried to regain the lead two minutes in the second half, but Marcus Rashford’s low free-kick near the area failed to trouble Arrizabalaga.

United slightly dropped their intensity with the visitors afforded time and space in and around the offensive area, as Alexis Sanchez replaced Rashford and Andreas Christensen replaced for Rudiger on 64 minutes.

With time running out, United made another change after 71 minutes as Marcos Rojo replaced defender Bailly.

Chelsea threw in another change, an offensive one in the last 15 minutes with Ruben Loftus-Cheek sent on to line-up with Gonzalo Higuain as Maurizio Sarri went for the jugular.

United almost grabbed a winner two minutes in added time, as Pedro knocked Marcos Rojo’s header off the goal-line.

At the other end, Higuain beat the offside trap to run onto a through ball but De Gea rushed off his line to thwart the effort, as the spoils were shared in Manchester.
