TWO Chinese nationals have been slapped with a 33 months jail terms after they were convicted for attempting to kill a legislator’s son and her girlfriend while hunting for suspected armed robbers.

Luo Tingpen and Li Yize, both aged 27, were convicted after a full trial during which prosecutor Michael Reza proved that they committed the offence together with their Zimbabwean employee Nigel Zuze, 23.

Zuze was also convicted of the same offence of trying to kill the MP’s son Kevin Guzah and his girlfriend Kudzai Nduku but was however, given a shorter sentence of 21 months’ imprisonment.

Harare magistrate Hosea Mujaya initially sentenced Tingpen and Yize to three and half years in prison while Zuze had been sentenced to two and a half years.

However, the court conditionally suspended nine months from the trio’s sentences.

The magistrate ruled that Zuze deserved a shorter sentence since he acted on the orders of Tingpeng and Yize.

Zuze also pleaded leniency saying he had a family to take care of which resulted in his sentence being shortened.

Meanwhile, the fact that the two Chinese nationals have a similar case pending before the courts weighed against them.

The magistrate said this was a clear indication that they were not remorseful and not law abiding.

According to prosecutor Reza, the attempted murder occurred when complainant Guzah was driving a Toyota Vitz in the company of girlfriend Nduku along Lincoln Road in Belgravia, Harare.

As they approached Number 17 Lincoln Road, they heard gunshots from a nearby house.

Fearing for their lives, the couple made a U-turn and drove towards Zuva Service Station in Belgravia.

Court heard the three convicts who are part of a reaction team at Jinglong Security, had earlier received an alert from their client that he had been robbed by people driving a Toyota Wish vehicle.

They came out of the house where the shooting was taking place and chased after the Toyota Vitz driven by Guzah.

Guzah lost control of his vehicle and crashed into one of the fuel pumps at Zuva Service Station.

The chasing trio jumped out of their cars, approached Guzah’s vehicle and shot Nduku in the pelvis before assaulting her.

According to a doctor who is treating Nduku, she will never be able to walk again.

Court heard that Guzah got out of his car and tried to flee but fell into a trench.

One of the accomplices came and shot him in the pelvis while he was still lying down.
