Defiant Chamisa continues carrying out acting president duties

MDC-T Vice President Nelson Chamisa has ignored the leadership confusion in the party and continued with series of programmes as the Acting President despite co-Vice President Elias Mudzuri contesting his role.
There was confusion Thursday with both Chamisa and Mudzuri claiming to be the acting President in the absence of party leader Morgan Tsvangirai who is hospitalised in South Africa.
MDC-T presidential spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, issued a statement saying Tsvangirai had appointed Chamisa as the acting leader, but Mudzuri responded with his own statement, saying he had just spoken to the ailing former prime minister who had assured him he was still the acting president.
This riled Tamborinyoka, who called a hastily organized press conference where he insisted that he remained the voice of the former trade union leader and that whatever he communicated would have come from Tsvangirai.
Elsewhere, Chamisa was undeterred, addressing the party’s Zvimba East district structures at Harvest House, the MDC-T’s headquarters, where he presented a policy programme he said was aimed at improving the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans.
And in another statement issued Friday, Tamborinyoka said Chamisa had told the party structures that the MDC-T was poised to bring about economic growth as it had practical solutions for each sector.
“He (Chamisa) said as the next leader of the country, President Morgan Tsvangirai had shown during the inclusive government his capacity to deliver positive change in people’s lives,” Tamborinyoka said.
He added that Chamisa acknowledged the discipline exhibited by the Mashonaland West provincial executive by implementing the consensus approach in the MDC Alliance candidate selection in line with the directive given by Tsvangirai.
Chamisa is expected to meet minority groups and engage other critical sectors ahead of the next election, including civic groups and women’s organizations among others.Advertisement
