“MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai is heading for a fresh clash with authorities amid revelations that he plans to personally lead street protests being organised by his opposition party from the frontline,” reported the New Zimbabwe.
“The opposition party spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora last week revealed to The Standard modalities for the protests against the worsening economic crisis in the country would be worked out soon after the opposition party’s elective congress set for next month.
“The protests will be more coordinated. The party leadership will be at the front in some of the protests depending on the situation. Definitely, the leadership, including president Tsvangirai, will be there on the front,” Mwonzora told The Standard.
MDC leaders leading from the front; that is new! In the past the leaders have called on their supporters to defy Zanu PF thuggery and to even fight back; they would all retreat in their ministerial cars to leave their supporters to face the music alone in the rural back waters.
When Mugabe would not announce the March 2008 elections results, it was clear Mugabe was “cooking the results” as Archbishop Desmond Tutu aptly put. It would have made a lot of sense for the people to have gone out on the streets and demanded that the result be made public. Tsvangirai with his usual breath-taking incompetence said there were to be no public protests. He later changed his mind but the sting had been lost!
Many people were surprised when Tsvangirai agreed to take part in the presidential run-off in 2008. Having spent five weeks cooking the results to deny Tsvangirai the victory there was no doubt Mugabe and his murderous thugs would stop at nothing to ensure the tyrant’s victory. The country saw the worst wanton electoral violence ever and Tsvangirai had led the nation straight into the fire and all the MDC leaders disappeared like morning mist under the African sun.
Some MDC leaders were leading from the back in South Africa or Botswana; those who remained in the country went into hiding and lived in a darkened room for weeks. As for Tsvangirai himself, he would have left Usain Bolt eating the dust as he made the dash for the Netherlands Embassy!
Now we are being told that this time things will be different; “definitely, the leadership, including president Tsvangirai, will be there on the front,” motor-mouth Mwonzora assured us. What has changed?Advertisement
Ever since Mugabe rigged the July 2013 elections and kicked Tsvangirai and his fellow MDC idiots off the gravy train, MDC leaders have been desperate to get back on the gravy train. The economic meltdown has hit everyone hard, Tsvangirai and his MDC friends have not been spared. During the GNU Tsvangirai had developed an appetite for a life of luxury – he played golf with the air of one who has played nothing else all his life. Sadly, all that came to a screeching stop; he is so poor he would gladly accept the ball-boy tips at the golf club if his ego did not stand in the way.
But the economic meltdown has given Tsvangirai the “red bull” wings to lead the street protest from the front; he is that desperate to get back on the gravy train. Of course, having red bull wings in one thing but knowing where you are going is another.
The US Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Chris Dell, 2004 to 2007 said Tsvangirai was “a flawed and indecisive character” according to WikiLeaks. God only knows how many times Tsvangirai has proven the Ambassador right since then. The worst Tsvangirai blunder was to fail to implement even one reform during the GNU. It is therefore with the greatest misgiving that one views Tsvangirai back on the national political stage with his red-bull wings because two things are certain; first there will be costly blunders, it comes from being led by a blundering incompetent. Second, and more worrying, where will Tsvangirai lead us to?
The GNU should have delivered the democratic reforms the nation has been dying for all these 34 years if only the MDC had implemented them. The economic meltdown has forced Mugabe and Zanu PF to realise that rigging the 2013 elections was not enough to guarantee their hold onto power; they have to rig economic recovery too.
But it is now over a year since they rigged elections and the economy is in total meltdown – proof the regime has failed to rig economic recovery. Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown is man-made as it is a culmination of 34 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption by successive Mugabe regimes.
By rigging the elections Mugabe created the political crisis of having an illegitimate regime which does not have the political will to deal with the country’s long standing economic ills of mismanagement and corruption and a government that cannot be trusted to uphold the rule of law by donors and foreign investors alike.
As long as Mugabe and Zanu PF remain in power the economic meltdown will only get worse. The only way to end this nightmare is for Mugabe and his cronies to step down so that all the democratic reforms that should have been implemented during the GNU are finally implemented and free, fair and credible elections are held.
We need to replace this illegitimate regime with a legitimate one with the mandate to deal with the big issues affecting the nation and one the rest of the world can do business with!
In their haste to get back on the gravy train, Tsvangirai and his fellow incompetent MDC leaders are not seeking democratic transformation the nation has been dying for all the-se years, but another political compromise, another GNU, just to get back on the gravy train.
Whilst the 2008 to 2013 GNU was a halfway house in that it would have delivered a democratic government if MDC had implemented the reforms; the new GNU Tsvangirai has been proposing will never deliver any democratic changes. In the last GNU, the MDC had the majority in parliament and cabinet and it had the backing of SADC to help push the reform agenda, but this time it is Zanu PF who holds all the trump cards!
When push comes to shove which is what the continued economic meltdown will result in; Mugabe will gladly accept another politically marriage of convenience with MDC in which Zanu PF is once again guaranteed to remain the dominant partner than lose all power altogether which is what the situation demands.
The price of allowing Tsvangirai with his red bull wings to lead from the front is that he will betray the nation once again and let Mugabe and Zanu PF off the hook! It will be sheer folly for Zimbabweans to expect Tsvangirai, who has already proven to be breathtakingly incompetent, to do anything else!
