Former Highlanders stars Gilbert Banda and Mthulisi Maphosa

AGING former Highlanders stars Gilbert Banda and Mthulisi Maphosa are looking to wind up their careers at newly promoted Premier Soccer League side Bulawayo City.
Maphosa’s contract with Bosso ended on December 31 having been sidelined by injury sustained in a league match against Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium in July.
Banda has been at How Mine for the last two seasons, but seems to be on the verge of leaving the club as well after the club owners, Metallon Gold Zimbabwe, made several changes to the management of the team.
Former chairman Mlondolozi Nkomo was moved to Harare, then acting Alpha Matumbura was transferred to Redwing Mine while coach Luke Masomere was also fired. The new team management is yet to be named.
The team fought relegation until the last day of the season under caretaker coaches Sheunesu Chaka and Jeremiah Makota.
Nkomo and Matumbura had settled for former Bosso coach Rahman Gumbo to replace Masomere before they left the team.
Both Banda, 34, and Maphosa turned up for training last Tuesday at Barbourfields Stadium where they were seeking to impress City coach Philani ‘Beefy’ Ncube, together with 45 other players.
Ncube though, says, they are yet to decide if they will sign any players as they already have 26 on their books. Their slot has just four more places left.
Banda played for Highlanders for more than a decade winning four league titles and also participated in the team’s Champions League hunt. He also played for FC Platinum in 2011 in the Champions League.
Maphosa, 37, groomed at Zimbabwe Saints, had a stint at Monomotapa where he took part in the Champions League in 2009 before moving to TP Mazembe in the DRC.
He returned home to join Platinum in 2012 before moving to Highlanders.
City will be one of the three municipal owned teams in the PSL together with Harare City and Mutare City.Advertisement
