Hwange: A Binga gold panner met a 14-year-old girl in Zvishavane in December last year and proposed love to her before eloping with her a month later.
Chitani Mudimba (33) took the girl to his rural home in Kamativi under Chief Pashu where they started staying as husband and wife.
Ten months into the marriage, Mudimba thoroughly beat the girl and she reported him for assault.
After listening to her story, police invoked the child protection laws and Mudimba is being charged with unlawful detention, having sexual intercourse with a young person and domestic violence.
He pleaded not guilty before Hwange magistrate Collet Ncube who remanded him to this Friday for continuation of trial.
Prosecutors allege that Mudimba met the girl in November last year, proposed love and she accepted.
In December, the two eloped and went to Binga where they lived happily until last week Thursday when Mudimba beat his juvenile wife with a piece of wood at night.
“The accused met the complainant in Zvishavane during the month of November 2019 and proposed love to her and she accepted.
“In December, he decided to marry her. He asked her to meet him at Mberengwa turn-off and the two proceeded to the accused’s rural home where they started staying together as husband and wife without the girl’s parents’ knowledge,” said prosecutor Vumizulu Mangena.
Mudimba and the girl allegedly had a misunderstanding which resulted in him picking a log and hitting her several times on the body and hands.
The girl fled from home and sought refuge at the village head’s homestead before reporting to the police who then arrested Mudimba.
The girl was taken to Binga District Hospital where she was treated and discharged.
