AT least 15 suspected armed robbers have been arrested in the past few months including five last week alone.

In a statement recently, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the five Godfrey Josi (35), Austin Ncube (27), Harmony Nyathi (29), Polite Madamombe (34) and Wisdom Tariro (22) were spotted at Zindoga Shopping Centre in Harare and tried to escape after realising detectives were on their tail.

“The accused persons sped off, prompting detectives to fire warning shots in the air,” explained Nyathi.

“The accused persons did not take heed and detectives shot at the car deflating one front tyre.

“Josi, Madamombe, Ncube and Nyathi were immediately arrested leading to the recovery of 9mm Glock pistol with an erased serial number, live ammunition and explosives among other things.”

Upon interrogation police said the four led them to a house in Warren Park where Tariro was arrested.

Detectives, according to the statement, recovered a Taurus pistol, 9 Rossi revolver, live ammunition as well as several bottles of whiskey.

“Police have in the past few months arrested 15 people involved in armed robberies and will continue to work until all are stopped.”
