Caps United 3-0 Shabanie Mine
Triangle 1-1 Highlanders
HIGHLANDERS dropped points away to Triangle while CAPS United put aside their money wrangles to thump Shabanie Mine 3-0 in Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches played Sunday.
With the win, Caps moved to 17 points, two behind Dynamos who lost 1-0 to Hwange at the Colliery on Sunday. Caps are now in sixth place after 11 rounds of the league.
Caps players went on strike last Saturday and were hammered 3-0 by Chapungu in a match where midfielder Hardlife Zvirekwi pulled out at the last minute due to unpaid allowances and salaries.
The former champions eventually settled the bill on Thursday and, from Sunday’s match at the National Sports Stadium, there was every sign that the players were a happy lot.
Zvirekwi was, however benched for the match, probably as punishment for refusing to travel to Gweru, and only came in later in the second half when the Green Machine were leading 2-0.
Caps United were 1-0 up after only 12 minutes through a sumptuous goal by Pevington Zimunya, who ran to his right and then curled the ball in with his left past a stranded Victor Twaliki.
The visitors tried to come back into the match but were guilty of missing a number of chances as the game wore on, but were also solid in repelling the Caps attacks.
Ronald Pfumbidzai then made it 2-0 in the 74th minute from the penalty spot after Twaliki had brought down Gerald Phiri in the box and that settled the nerves of the Caps fans.
Malawian international Gerald Phiri then put the icing on the cake two minutes into added time when he slotted home a rebound after Twaliki had punched a Dominic Mukandi shot onto his path.
At Gibbo Stadium, Highlanders suffered their sixth draw of the season when they were held to a 1-1 stalemate by lowly Triangle at Gibbo Stadium.
But that was enough to take the 2006 champions into second place with 21 points, one behind new leaders Hwange.
How Mine, who beat Buffaloes 2-1 on Thursday, are third, also with 21 points.
Highlanders scored through a Charles Sibanda penalty kick in the ninth minute – his fourth goal in three matches before Triangle ensured a share of the spoils in the 73rd minute through a Brian Juwayeyi strike.Advertisement
