Highlanders 3-0 How Mine
HIGHLANDERS finally ended their Cup drought with a 3-0 win over How Mine to lift the prestigious Mbada Diamonds Cup at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday.
First half strikes by Njabulo Ncube and Peter Moyo as well as a second half goal by Masimba Mambare earned the Bulawayo giants their first piece of silverware since 2011.
After closely missing out on the league title as well as Bob89 and Independence trophy, Highlanders atoned for their near misses.
It finally paid off for coach Kelvin Kaindu who had been under immense pressure from the fans to at least bag something and ease tension emanating from rivals Dynamos sweep of trophies on offer.
In a display of strong character Highlanders banished Howe Mine newly-found status of giant killers in a season where the debutants eliminated Dynamos and Caps United from this competition.
Highlanders intentions were clear as early as the opening minute when Ncube closely missed a Gabriel Nyoni pass.
But the forward made amends on 18 minutes by doing justice to another feed by Nyoni.
Simon Munawa had a powerful shot going just wide as Highlanders continued probing.
Man-of-the-match Moyo doubled the lead with a perfect shot past an out of sorts How Mine defence that had veteran centre back Hebert Dick off form.
Ncube had a disallowed goal just before half time as the referee ruled him offside.
Mambare sealed the victory four minutes into the second half to send Highlanders fans into wild jubilation.Advertisement
