Highlanders suffer Harare setback

HIGHLANDERS were their own enemies with a drab showing that saw them  being edged 1-0 by Harare City at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday, to allow bitter rivals and league leaders Dynamos to go four points clear of them.
Francisco Zekumbawire grabbed the all-important goal that condemned the Bulawayo giants  to third place following ZPC Kariba’s 2-1 victory over Black Rhinos on the same afternoon.
Kelvin Kaindu’s charges never acquitted themselves as a side in contention for the league crown as they were lucky to survive numerous City attacks.
A mistake-prone defence was Highlanders’ biggest weakness in this match.
All first half, the visitors never made any meaningful attack as they were forced to back-peddle as early as the seventh minute when Martin Vengesai tested goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda with a shot just outside the box.
Osborne Mukuradare and James Jam also came close to hand Harare City the lead but found Sibanda unyielding.
Twenty minutes into the match, Zekumbawire connected on first touch Mukuradare’s pass to separate the two sides.
Zekumbawire almost extended City’s lead but was too slow to control a pass by William Manondo as the hosts continued to pile pressure which almost got Highlanders defender Erick Mudzingwa score an own goal.
A weak Joel Ngodzo shot at goal was the only attempt by Highlanders in the first half.
Mukuradare had a low drive that whisked just past the upright post early into the second half as City continued to torment the Highlanders rearguard.
Charles Sibanda called Harare City goalkeeper Maxwell Nyamupanedengu to action for the first time in the game with a shot that however never troubled the goalie.
From then, Highlanders never launched any meaningful raid but it was their opponents who continued seeking goals.
