MASVINGO: A bid by a sex worker to rescue a colleague  being attacked by a client turned fatal after she was stabbed to death, a local court heard last Friday.

Peter Gwari (age not given) was not asked to plead to murder when he appeared before Bikita magistrate Calisto Mutema.

He was remanded in custody to February 15 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutors told the court that the incident occurred February 1 this year.

The now-deceased Moreblessing Mudakuchekwa and colleague Charity Matuke were drinking beer at Nyika Growth Point when they were joined by Gwari.

After spending some time drinking together, Gwari engaged the services of Matuke.

The two proceeded to a house were the sex workers shared a single room, leaving Mudakuchekwa at a night club at the growth point.

When they arrived at the shared lodging, Matuke found her colleague’s three-months-old baby crying unattended.

She told her client that she had to attend to the baby first before could have sex.

However, Gwari would have none of it and insisted on having sex. He reportedly ordered Matuke to leave the baby behind and accompany him to his home instead.

A fierce argument then arose between the two resulting in Gwari assaulting Matuke with open hands.

The mother of the child arrived at that time and, angry at Gwari, she locked the door from inside and started crying for help from neighbours.

Gwari reportedly broke the window and tried to escape but Mudakuchekwa got hold of him and dragged him back into the room.

According to prosecutors, Gwari then produced a knife and stabbed Mudakuchekwa twice before running away.

She reportedly dropped to the floor and died on the spot.

A police report was made by Matuke and Mudakuchekwa’s body was taken to Silveria Mission hospital for a post-mortem.

Gwari was arrested the following morning while trying to board busses heading to Mutare.
