KAIZER Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande says he feels like a “special player” after being nominated for the PSL Footballer of the Season award.
Katsande is up against Bidvest Wits captain Sibusiso Vilakazi and Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Alje Schut for the League’s top award, as well as for the Players’ Player of the Season.
“I am happy to be nominated. It is a feeling that I cannot put into words. I will always look at this season in my career and thank God for the opportunity he gave me to play soccer at this level,” Katsande tells the Chiefs website.
“Receiving a nomination in big awards such as this is the dream of every footballer. I will remember this for my entire life. I feel special as a player, especially playing for such a colossal team, Kaizer Chiefs.”
The combative Zimbabwean defensive midfielder improved his discipline in the 2013/14 League campaign and only picked up five yellow cards in 28 League matches.
Katsande believes that through the help of the Chiefs coaches, it is one of the reasons why his game matured.
“I continued to work hard and to improve from the previous season. The coaches helped me to polish certain aspects of my game.
“I improved on minimising the bookings. The coaches also worked on my confidence. My teammates have supported me and encouraged me to do well,” he adds.
“My family have always been there even during low moments. I get a lot of support from my sister back home [in Zimbabwe]. I made sure I didn’t get discouraged by negativity around my play. I stayed focused and worked harder to improve.
“For now I’m looking forward to a good rest. I will be working on my mental readiness towards tackling the next season with the same energy and attitude. I want to be consistent and take my soccer career to the next level.Advertisement
