Young Africans 5-1 FC Platinum

FC Platinum lack of experience was crudely exposed when they were crushed by Tanzanian champions Young Africans in the first leg, first round Caf Confederation match at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Mrisho Ngasa struck twice for the hosts who got their other goals from Salum Abdul, Haruna Niyonzima and Amissi Tambwe while Platinum got their consolation from Walter Musona.
Playing without many of their veteran players that coach Norman Mapeza seems to have ditched, who include Nelson Mazivisa, Daniel Vheremu and Aaron Katebe, Platinum were 2-1 by halftime.
But two quick goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half exposed young Kelvin Moyo’s lack of experience at this level after Mapeza let veteran left wing back Qadr Amini leave for Dynamos at the end of last season.
Kelvin’s twin brother Elvis partnered Gift Bello in the heart of defence, but both were found wanting as Yanga took a comfortable lead into the second leg at Mandava in two weeks’ time.
Worse for Mapeza, veteran striker Donald Ngoma pulled out of the match on the eve of departure on Friday due to illness while new signing Wellington Kamudyariwa seemed overawed by the occasion.
Yet Mapeza had the more experienced midfielder Simon Shoko on the bench.
It could have been worse towards the end of the match as Yanga piled on the pressure to get a sixth goal, but Platinum held on and will now seek four unanswered goals in the return leg to progress to the next round.
So poor were Platinum in the second half that Wisdom Mutasa, the scorer of two goals in the 2-1 win over Sofapaka in the second leg of the preliminary round did not manage a shot at goal while the entire team managed just three in 45 minutes.
But as things stand, Mapeza has to change approach and restore the experienced players to his side to avoid a home humiliation.
To get to the first round, Platinum had beaten Sofapaka 4-2 on aggregate after winning 2-1 home and away.
