HEADLANDS – An 11 months-old infant drowned in a 20 litre bucket of water while trying to retrieve his toy, police have confirmed.

Manicaland province police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said the now deceased, Lashley Mawarira last week, at around 1000 hours, was playing with his toys at his parents’ homestead.

His mother Nyaradzai Nyamariodza (26) was reportedly doing some laundry 30 metres away from the homestead.

She left the minor unattended near three buckets which were full of water.

The boy reportedly dropped a toy in one of the buckets and tried to retrieve it.

“The minor fell headlong into one of the buckets while trying to retrieve his toy which had fallen into the bucket,” said Kakohwa.

In a separate incident, 16-month-old Tafadzwa Mukwekwe from Sereko village under Chief Saunyama in Nyanga drowned after her mentally challenged mother Jane Khumbulani left her with her three-year-old sister playing around buckets of water.

The deceased’s father Dominic Mukwekwe reported the matter to police who attended the scene.

The body was taken to Regina Coeli Mission hospital for post mortem.

Kakohwa urged parents to closely monitor their children when they are playing around water containers.
