MARONDERA: A man who turned violent at a local nightclub here and assaulted police officers before telling them that he would only follow instructions from the army has been remanded in custody.

Itai Saukwindi was arraigned before a Marondera magistrate, Arnold Maburo facing charges of assaulting a security guard and two police officers at Tutani Nightclub in Dombotombo last week.

According to prosecutor, Lee Gada, Saukwindi was drinking beer at the nightclub when he turned violent and started assaulting Lovemore Nyambe, a security guard at the joint.

Two police constables, Owen Chokododo and one Makaranga, who were on
patrol, intervened.

However, Saukwindi assaulted the two cops telling them they became useless last November when the then President Robert Mugabe was removed from office by the army during Operation Restore Legacy and as a result only soldiers could arrest him.

Police reinforcement had to be called in as Saukwindi resisted arrest insisting that only soldiers had the right and power to apprehend him.

He was later overpowered and arrested before he was brought to court last week and was remanded in custody to next month for trial.
