A 36-year-old man from Nyajena communal lands here in Masvingo assaulted his wife to death after she had reprimanded him for squandering the family’s money on friends and beer, a local court heard recently.
Nhema Nyamayevhu was not asked to plead to murder charges when he appeared before Masvingo magistrate Langton Ndokera last week.
He was remanded in custody to 4 September and was asked to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecutor Fidelis Nyamukondiwa told court that sometime in July this year, the couple sold a beast to raise money for the family’s financial commitments.
Court heard that on 15 July, the now deceased Molly Elias (33) confronted her husband on why he was spending the money sourced from the sale of the beast on alcohol and entertaining friends at the expense of family needs.
Court was told that Nyamayevhu got offended by his wife’s challenge and took a switch and a log which he used to assault her all over the body until she lost consciousness.
She died the following morning as a result of injuries she sustained from the assault while Nyamayevhu had already fled the homestead to visit a traditional healer in Chipinge.
He was only arrested upon his return.
