A Tsholotsho man died when a commuter omnibus ran over him as he tried to stop the vehicle to avenge an attack on his one-year old son, a court heard.

Munyaradzi Vundla (31) of Jimila Line under Chief Mathuphula was riding in a donkey drawn cart Wednesday last week with his one-year-old son Nqobizitha when they met a kombi going the opposite direction along the Tsholotsho-Sipepa road.

Vundla stopped his cart and signalled the driver of the kombi to stop as he wanted to enquire about a child who was crying in the vehicle.

An argument ensued between Vundla and the kombi crew namely Samuel Moyo and his conductor Mthulisi Mguni.

Mguni then allegedly picked an iron bar and threw in the direction of the cart intending to hit Vundla but missed him.

The iron bar allegedly hit the tot on the head causing him some injuries.

This angered Vundla who immediately jumped in front of the vehicle to try and force the driver, who was about to drive away, to stop.

However, the driver allegedly ran over Vundla causing him serious injuries.

He later died on admission to Tsholotsho District Hospital.

Police arrested the driver, Moyo of Nkulumane 12 in Bulawayo and charged him with murder.

Police impounded the vehicle.

He appeared before Tsholotsho magistrate Victor Mpofu recently and was not asked to plead to the charge.

Moyo was remanded in custody to this week.
